Christmas 2007 and New Year's 2008

Christmas 2007 was spent by the trees, opening gifts and eating gourmet cheese Eric brought back from Hong Kong.  We had duck for dinner and I even got to have my favorite, Christmas pudding, that Eric gave me as one of my gifts.  Over the Christmas break we went to Osan where we saw some gentlemen playing paduk in the street, a common sight as you wind your way through back alleys.  We also found a beautiful covered market hidden in an alley.

New Year's Eve was spent at Bosingak for the ringing of the bell.  I, of course, cried my eyes out.  It was such a great feeling to be in that crowd celebrating and it was just one more thing that made me thankful to be in this extraordinary county!  One thing you can't see from the pictures is that EVERYONE can shoot off their own fireworks.  Vendors sell them on the street.  So, you are covered in soot and smell like sulfur when you leave for the evening.  They had a huge electronic count down clock and everyone one counted off the final 10 seconds of 2007 and then they rang Bosingak... the only time of year that the enormous bell is rung.  And then, Auld Lang Syne was sung in Korean!  That surprised me but made me determined to learn the words for next year so I can sing along.
